Our year in review 2009
This is a time of year for looking back at what we have done this past year. We always start our with just a board meeting in January so we can look over our club business and try to plan for the coming year.
In February our speaker was Dorothy Kosowsky who talked to us about sinningias. She had started cuttings for us and everyone got one at this meeting
In March our speaker was Earnest Willingham who gave us a program on organic composting. He told us how he makes it and what he put in so we can make it in our own gardens. It makes wonderful soil. He also gave us a list of web sites we can look at for information on composting.
In April was a culture program which we have this time of year. Several members told us how they grow their begonias. Elaine brought her plant of ‘sizemorea’ which she shared leaves for us to start in terrariums.
In May our speaker was Julie Grover from Armstrong nursery. She brought lots of plants and soil and planted two containers bowls for our garden. They really were lovely and we raffled them off. We all enjoyed that talk too. She also brought us copies of the nurseries new magazine called California Gardener.
In June our speaker was Don Delano which we all learn so much from. He shared lots of cuttings with us and we really appreciate when he can take his time to come and speak to us. It was a fun meeting.
June was also the month for the fern show and several of our members entered plants and won ribbons for them.
Beverlyis the president of the fern society and appreciated our members for entering and some for helping at the show.
In July we had a member participation meeting and everyone was asked to bring a tool or idea they use in their gardening. We also brought plants we have that are growing nicely or one’s we need help with. These kinds of meetings are always nice because everyone gets involved and we learn from each other.
For August our speaker was very interesting as he told us of the Blue Birds of Orange County. He told us how volunteers take care of these birds to keep them safe and help them to multiply. He also had birdhouses for sale and several members bought them to try to get these beautiful birds in their gardens.
September brought us the Butterfly Ladies, Kristen and Vickie who told and showed us how they invite butterflies into their gardens. They had caterpillars to show us and told us what plants help these lovely creatures live in our gardens. They also had lots of things we could buy.
In October we had a speaker on
Wormsand how they work for us in our gardening. She told us about how she and her partner got started growing these very important ingredients we need in our gardening. She sold the worm cstings.
Last month in November we were supposed to have a program on all the old movies they have made at the Arboretum but he was sick and told us he will come at a later date so that will be something we can look forward to in the new year.
